  • Dry eye – Dry eye is a potentially serious problem that occurs when your eyes are producing abnormal or insufficient tear film to keep your eyes lubricated, protected and moist. Treatments include artificial tears or other eye drops, changing medications or addressing underlying conditions that cause dryness, and lifestyle recommendations such as avoiding excessive computer use or ceiling fans.
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis) – Eye infections can cause severe discomfort, and conjunctivitis, better known as pink eye, is no exception. Pink eye symptoms include characteristic redness or pinkness of the white part of the eye, eyelid swelling, itching and fluid discharge from the eye. Your eye doctor can treat this eye disease via eye drops, antibiotics (for bacterial conjunctivitis) and soothing home care to get the symptoms under control.
  • Allergies – Allergic reactions can resemble eye infections; in fact, they can cause a condition known as allergic conjunctivitis. But unlike an eye infection which might occur only once in your lifetime, allergies may bother your eyes on a seasonal or even continuous basis. We can treat this problem with antihistamines, corticosteroids, decongestants and other medications, while also recommending methods for avoiding specific allergens.
  • Glaucoma – Glaucoma is an eye disease that causes destruction of the optic nerve, resulting in partial or even total vision loss. It is usually related to a buildup of fluid pressure inside an eye that is having trouble its excess fluid through the tiny ducts that normally handle this task. The most common variety of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma, shows no symptoms early on, but your Yakima optometrist at our clinic can diagnose it through tonometry (a method for checking the pressure in the eye). We can then prescribe eye drops and/or oral medications to help normalize the pressure.
